Our laboratory is located near the old city of Heidelberg and its historic castle, located at the Center for Molecular Biology (ZMBH), a basic research institute of the University of Heidelberg and part of the ZMBH-DKFZ-Alliance with the German Center for Cancer Research (DKFZ), an institution of the national Helmholtz Association.

The Knop lab is focussed on the understanding of cellular processes related to cell morphogenesis and cell signaling.

In the past we have contributed to the understanding of a developmentally controlled cell differentiation pathway – spore formation in yeast.

We apply systemic approaches to understand the collective behavior of molecules and how they provide functionality to cells.

Our goal is to gain a quantitative understanding by using state-of-the art methods, in particular advanced microscopic techniques or instrumentation in order to visualize the spatial and temporal behavior of molecules inside living cells. Where necessary, we develop our own instruments (or here).

For our research we exploit a highly versatile experimental system – the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This model is currently the best studied organism and therefore plays a crucial role in exploring new frontiers in basic cellular science. This is because yeast is the only organism that permits genome editing exactly in the way we want it. This facilitates enormously the construction of tailor-made transgenic strains for functional studies.

To conduct our research, we are always interested in receiving applications from experimentalists with a biology or physics background and from computer scientists interested in systems biology.
